   To be totally noob proof you might want to mention that you need the c compiler package (build-essential) installed to build the module

   ie:

   sudo apt-get install build-essential

   PS good point about gksudo at the end most ppl forget

   … I am confused.

   Why? Is there something wrong with the binary 180.44 driver in Jaunty? Usually, installing NVIDIA’s binary run package will also change things out from underneath the package manager, which may make future upgrades a bit difficult. Apt doesn’t really like to overwrite files that it knows it didn’t put there…

   Well, when it comes to gaming, I need bleeding edge.. Nvidia makes the drivers, so why not get it early rather than wait until it finally trickles into the repos.. ?

   Right, but I am still confused… 180.44 is already in Jaunty…

   That said, just take care when you upgrade. Swapping things out from underneath apt can bork the next dist-upgrade you do. But I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone else.

   It’s not all that great anyway. It’s the best 3D driver I am aware of for Linux… but man am I getting sick and tired of filing bug reports because my system crashes with strange NVIDIA Xid errors in the system logs…

   true.. you have a valid point my man. I guess maybe its more just me like hacking / breaking / making things difficult? LOL Prob best to just use the restricted driver manager..

   Note: If you have the restricted NVIDIA driver installed, be sure to uninstall it before attempting to install the new driver.
   Otherwise installed no problem in 9.04.
