What happened to the Linuxcrypt Podcast?
So, over the last two months I’ve been getting a TON of email asking in summation, “DUBYA TEE EFF Happened to the Linuxcypt.net podcast?”
Well, there has been a lot going on. I have been heading up the Atlanta Linux Fest with the Ubuntu Ga LoCo team which is on September 20th. I have also started another podcast with Nick Ali called ubuntupodcast. I also just recently became married on August 29th in Antigua. If you would lilke to see the wedding photos click here.
After This week is over I plan to resume the LC podcasts starting season 2. The format will probably be quite a bit different. I want to focus more on review and how to podcasting as well as news. For more of the weekly news I will be using the ubuntupodcast with Nick on that. I hope you stick around and enjoy the new format that will be coming out. In any case, for any other questions please feel free to email me joshua.d.chase [at] gmail.com.
So with this, I leave you ninjacat!

Vista! It’s a great media center.. No.. Seriously..
Now that I have your attention with the title, I was once again surprised, but not shocked to read the article relating to DRM restrictions built into Windows Vista. Ars Technica has a story detailing the issues end users were experiencing with recording their favorite television programs. The issue is being investigated by NBC and Microsoft, and from what it looks like, it seems someone “accidentally” fell on a switch that prohibited VISTA MCE users to record American Gladiator & Medium.
You know, if you have listened to our podcasts or watched the show, where I stand on DRM better known as (digital restrictions management) and this article is just fuel for the fire for open source software. Or at the least, non-DRM platforms.
The not so computer savy general market is getting ripped off. They are paying for hardware, operating systems and content delivery, which is controlled by a third party on the way it will work and when, even if by accident. Tivo, and regular DVR users were not impacted by this as it was isolated to only VISTA MCE users. So if anything you get from this is to acknowledge the fact that Big Businesses (cough-Microsoft) in content delivery are not trying to find ways to best serve their customers, but looking out for their own interest even at the expense of your entertainment and product satisfaction.
Here is a screenshot of an EPIC FAIL

Fsckin is now writing for Ars Technica Open Ended!
So as a blogger / podcaster, I read a lot of other peoples blogs, listen to their casts, so on and so forth. Usually everyone has a top 5 or 10 favorite sites, and usually those are used as mental benchmarks for a level of enthusiasm, and professionalism that one tries to maintain. Well, Wayne Richardson has been one of those bloggers that I have in my RSS feeds and pay attention too often. He writes incredibly rich content, with screen casts, pix, and all the resources necessary to follow instruction. It’s awesome to see that a Linux enthusiast / blogger is now writing for Ars Technica Open Ended.
Congrats Wayne!

Just My Observation.. Obama / Clinton – Decision ’08
So, curiosity got the better of me, and I wanted to know who the democratic nominees were that Linux likes best. So if I were an operating system, and I wanted to vote for one of the democratic candidates, I might be influenced by the following information.
So first I pulled “barackobama.com” which is Barack Obama’s official website. If you look at the screenshot below, you will notice he is running on a Linux webserver. Linux likes to see this, I know his because my computer started humming when we pulled the page.

Ok, now time for Hillary’s Site. So below you can see, she likes the M$ webserver, however she doesn’t trust money coming into it. So for her “contribute” subdomain, she relies on the trusty Penguin system.

Now I”m not sying you should vote for one or the other.. I’m just a dude with a laptop, listen to the penguin is all I say
cheers,

Torvalds pans Apple with ‘utter crap’ putdown
Reading an article in the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ Linus Torvalds speaks at the linux.conf.au conference about Mac OSX versus Windows Vista. He is quoted “I don’t think they’re equally flawed – I think Leopard is a much better system,” he said. “(But) OS X in some ways is actually worse than Windows to program for. Their file system is complete and utter crap, which is scary.” He goes on to discuss that woes with new proprietary operating systems being bloated and taking control over how the system is being used, rather than being transparent.
I definitely have felt that way with my experiences using Vista. I haven’t honestly used Mac OSX intensely enough to speak about a comparison, although I have many closes friends and collegues that us OSX. Their general consensus is that yes it can be bloated in some areas, but that is usually due to the applications and how they are utilizing the resources of the system. I personally like OSX because it’s a beautiful blend of a powerful stable core kernel, with a magnificently designed interface that’s functional as well as sexy and gorgeous.
There is no denying that if you “go Mac” that you will end up drinking the kool aid from Steve Jobs’ hands simply because convenience generally outweighs quality. This isn’t to say that Apple doesn’t make quality products, it just means that you are trapped into the Apple world of software, online market place, and portable devices that they developed and manufactured by them.
All in all, it’s nice to see that the open source operating system distributions and applications have matured enough to a point where they are being considered for server / mobile computing over Windows or Mac, and that GNU/Linux developers can be a bit sassy / arrogant now because let’s be honest… Linux is a freakin’ beast.
p.s. I still think Mac is sexy as hell though. Mac is the high priced call girl you bring to the 20th high school reunion. Linux is who you marry
